The veterinary medicine profession holds great importance for society at both the individual and national levels. It focuses on protecting animals and humans from endemic and imported epidemic diseases that affect animals and their production capacity, and that may be transmitted from animals to humans through direct contact or handling of food products or animal waste. The profession is also concerned with farm management and the development of livestock and its products to provide animal protein from various sources, becoming an additional source for the national economy when self-sufficiency is achieved and products are exported abroad.
